The Sweet Things in Life
This project by AM Timber Flooring is a good example of maximising available floor space to show off the aesthetics of a home. These custom milled hardwood floors were the perfect compliment to this holiday retreat on Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula, which exudes a tactile warmth with dry stone walling and extensive use of natural timbers both in the interior features and exterior facades of the home.
The owner originally had American Sweet Gum (originating from southeastern United States and Central America) specially milled to create the 88mm planks, chosen due to the exposed grain and hue variation which worked perfectly with the finishes and textures in the homes design.
After some years however the original coating had discoloured and the floor was badly worn, hence a complete sand and re-coat was required.
AM Timber Flooring owner Antony Merrifield undertook the task, beginning with a full strip back to bare timber including butted edge work with no skirtings used. Then Bona Mix & Fill was applied to fill gaps which had opened up over time between the boards.
Bona Prime Classic UX was used as the sealer, with 2 x top coats of Bona Traffic HD Matt then applied to finish the job, and provide durability and extended lifespan for the floor so it will still look great in years to come. The stunning end result highlights the natural grain variation of the Sweet Gum planks with the extra matt finish minimising reflection to better enjoy the floors own natural beauty.
